Telugu actor Vijay Deverakonda has been featured in the 2019 Forbes India 30 Under 30 list. The only actor to make it on the list, Vijay’s rise to stardom has not exactly been swift or smooth. Let’s take a look at his journey so far.
Currently one of the most happening young actors down south, Vijay first came into limelight with the 2016 romantic comedy Pelli Choopulu. Though this was his first movie as the lead actor, he actually debuted in Tollywood way back in 2011 with Nuvvila. That was when he was dabbling in theatre. He also appeared in a two-bit role in Life is Beautiful and later in a supporting role in Yevade Subramanyam.
But the film that made a star of him was the 2017 blockbuster Arjun Reddy. Vijay struck a chord with the youth with his explosive performance as a violent, self-destructive surgeon. The movie won him a clutch of awards and made him a household name.
The critically-acclaimed movie is also being remade in Hindi as Kabir Singh with Shahid Kapoor in the lead and in Tamil as Varmaa with Dhruv reprising Vijay’s role. It remains to be seen if the talented Shahid can match Vijay’s performance in the remake.
After the sleeper hit Arjun Reddy, there has been no looking back for the charming star. Last year he managed to leave a mark in almost all of his movies. What has been impressive about him is his bold choice of movies and preference for playing strong, youth-centric roles. He has consciously stayed away from formulaic movies, preferring to play diverse roles across genres.
While Arjun Reddy was an intense movie, in Geetha Govindam he played a sweet love-stricken guy. The movie was a super-hit, even bigger than Arjun Reddy, making him a youth icon in Tollywood. And his latest movie Taxiwaala was a supernatural thriller drama, which too did well at the box-office. Last year, he made his Tamil-debut with the political thriller NOTA. In his upcoming film, Dear Comrade, he will be playing a communist student leader. He’s clearly not set his sights on becoming a typical mass-hero.
Vijay has not only been winning rave reviews for his acting prowess, but also winning hearts with his uber-cool style quotient. The good-looking actor has also been getting all the right attention for his sense of style.
Considering that Vijay is one of the (very) few Telugu stars with no godfathers, his success is even more inspiring. This social media post he put up after he made it to the Forbes list best sums up his journey. “Dad said settle before 30. That way you can enjoy your success when you are young and parents are healthy. 4 years later — Forbes Celebrity 100, Forbes 30 under 30.”
