In the year 2020, Bollywood saw a lot of groundbreaking movies that raptured the audience with brilliant scripts, beautiful direction and amazing stories. For most of the year, the movies premiered digitally due to pandemic and very few movies were released in theatres during the initial months.
From social issues to comedy to biography to historical, Bollywood explored every genre this year and made the most of it. Not to mention, the new movies released digitally was something everyone looked forward to while staying at home.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior - 10 January 2020
Ajay Devgn starrer historical action drama was one of the first movies to release and top Bollywood movies of 2020. It chronicles the epic historical event dating back to the 17th century when Tanaji Malusare recaptured the Kondana Fort. Along with Ajay Devgn, the film also starred Saif Ali Khan, Kajol, Sharad Kelkar and Luke Kenny. It was directed by Om Raut and produced under the banner Ajay Devgn FFlims and T-series. Following its success, the film was dubbed and released in Marathi as well and was later made available on Disney+ Hotstar. Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior became one the highest grossing films of 2020 with a gross collection of ₹367.65 crore worldwide.

Chhapaak - 10 January 2020
A tale of courage and strength, Chhapaak narrates the journey of an acid attack survivor Malti, and her fight for justice. The movie was directed by Meghna Gulzar and marked the debut production of Deepika Padukone. It featured Deepika Padukone, Vikrant Massey and Madhurjeet Sarghi in lead roles. Though it did not perform well at the box office, it was praised and well-received by the critics. Chhapaak was declared tax free in the Indian states of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh and became one of the best Hindi movies of 2020. It was later released on Disney+ Hotstar.

Panga - 24 January 2020
Kangana Ranaut starrer Panga narrates the life of a middle-class Indian mother and wife who makes a comeback in Kabaddi. Produced by Fox Star Studios, the movie was directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. Along with Kangana Ranaut the movie featured Jassi Gill, Richa Chadda and Neena Gupta in supporting roles. The movie was praised for its storyline, cast performance and garnered a gross collection of ₹41.71 crore worldwide. Later, the movie was also released on Disney+ Hotstar.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan - 21 February 2020
First, of its kind, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan traces the love story of a same-sex couple. A spin off to Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, the film featured Ayushmann Khurrana, Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao in the main roles and was directed by Hitesh Kewalya. It garnered positive reviews from the audience as well as the critics and narrated a strong social message. With a worldwide gross collection of ₹863.9 million, it became one of the top Bollywood movies of 2020. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan was later released on Amazon Prime Video. With movies like this being made, it can be rightly said that Bollywood is embracing change and moving towards a progressive direction.

Thappad - 28 February 2020
This Taapsee Pannu starrer movie once again sheds light on Indian feminine issues. With many movies made on problems of Indian women in the past, we think it is the one of the best Bollywood movies 2020 so far under the category, as it addresses the issue at core. It brings to light the conditioning Indian women go through of behaving and living their life a certain way. Along with Taapsee Pannu, the movie also featured Pavail Gulati, Dia Mirza, Kumud Mishra and Ratna Pathak Shah. Though released on the silver screen in February, it couldn’t stay long due to the pandemic and was soon released on Amazon Prime Video. In a short period of time, Thappad managed to impress the audience as well as the critics and garnered a gross collection of ₹43.77 crore worldwide.

Gulabo Sitabo - 17 June 2020 | Amazon Prime Video
Our best Bollywood movies 2020 list would have been incomplete without this one. The unexpected yet outstanding duo of Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana took this comedy-drama movie to another level. Released on Amazon Prime Video, Gulabo Sitabo was directed by the famous Shoojit Sircar. It narrates the story of an old house owner and his tenant who are always at war with each other. It won the hearts of the audience with its witty dialogues and cast performances and can easily be regarded as one of the top-rated Hindi films of 2020.

Shakuntala Devi - 31 July 2020 | Amazon Prime Video
The inspiring story of “the human calculator” came to life with the movie Shakuntala Devi released on Amazon Prime Video. The movie navigates the life journey of Shakuntala Devi as she balances her career along with her married life and also, about her role as a mother. The film also starred Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh and Jisshu Sengupta. Just like every other time, Vidya Balan did not fail to surprise us with her fabulous acting in the role as Shakuntala Devi in the movie and received a lot of praise. Without a doubt, it is one of the best Hindi movies of 2020.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl - 12 August 2020 | Netflix
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl was released globally on Netflix in August. Produced under Dharma Productions and Zee Studios, it is a biographical drama film about the first female air-pilot in Kargil War. The film stars Janhvi Kapoor in the lead role and Pankaj Tripathi, Angad Bedi and Ayesha Raza Mishra in supporting roles. The film is directed by Sharan Sharma. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil War is a must-watch for all father-daughter duos and among the best Hindi movies of 2020.
