Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties. It is also a game that throws up amusing situations. From mix-ups to mess-ups, from gaffes to goof-ups, the game has seen more than its fair share of funny incidents. Some of these incidents will leave you cramping with laughter. Here we compile some of the most humorous episodes to have taken place on a cricket pitch.
Statutory warning: While reading this, don’t go anywhere near a cemetery. You may disturb the departed souls with your laughter!
An innocuous outside edge of Azhar Ali’s bat sees the ball rolling off towards the boundary. Both he and non-striker Asad Shafiq come together for a mid-pitch chat. Then...a funny twist in the tale! Tim Paine collects the ball from the deep and dislodges the bails at the striker’s end. Run-out! Both the batsmen assumed that the ball had touched the boundary ropes whereas it had stopped just inches before it. A dumbfounded Azhar Ali looked around in bewilderment before trudging off. What do they say about assumption being the mother of all mess-ups?
Saeed Ajmal looks like positioning himself to catch a skier and guess what he does! At the last moment, he bails out by bending down as if signalling Shoaib Malik to take the catch instead. Malik, of course, is caught unawares by Ajmal’s ‘bail-out package’. This is crazy!
This is perhaps the cricketer’s version of a ‘bad day at the office’. Watch Shadab Jakati as he makes a hash of a simple run-out opportunity. First, he struggles to hold on to the ball. Then, he dislodges the bails without the ball in hand. Finally, he manages to hold on to the ball but throws it wide off the mark. Was it a cricket ball or a bar of soap?
Watch...err...listen as Mark Richardson howls in agony after tweaking a muscle while sweeping. It sounds more like a pig’s grunt! Turn up the audio. You will double up in laughter when Richardson goes ‘aaaaaa’’! No wonder the fielders gathered around him are grinning and chuckling.
This can only happen in an Indo-Pak encounter! In an intense match between these two sides during the 1992 World Cup, wicket-keeper Kiran More is pretty animated. The mercurial Javed Miandad mocks him by jumping up and down in his crease. He resembles a cat on a hot tin roof! Or better still, a monkey with its backside on fire!
This was entertainment at its best! Both Anil Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar would have won the ‘worst jugalbandi’ award if ever there was one. Batting at the crease, they were involved in a mix-up which can only be described as ‘indescribable’. It was, as the commentator said, “an absolute circus”!
Another royal mix-up! This time, between the batsman and the bowler! Watch how Brett Lee bumps into a confused Jonathon Trott who seems to be running around like a headless hen. You won’t be able to stop your guffaws. Absolutely and unbelievably ridiculous!
A red card in cricket? Yes! Glenn McGrath tries to do a ‘Trevor Chappell’ by bowling underarm. The maverick New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden then jumps into the act. He flashes an imaginary red card and gives McGrath a send-off in his very own belligerent style. Of course, all of this was in good spirit!
Mark Alleyne’s sliding-stumbling-sliding again-diving-and finally tumbling act is a laughter riot. Poor Alleyne! He was just trying to stop the ball but ended up looking like a clown.
When talking about funny incidents on the cricket field, can Inzamam-ul-Haq be far away? Watch how the burly Pakistani falls on his stumps while attempting a sweep shot. It resembles a sleepy bear falling in a heap!
