Before becoming The Suresh Raina, this UP lad has struggled a lot in his life. From living in dorms in a hostel to sleeping on the floor and struggling to get through his day after all the torture that he faced then, Raina has done it all.
It was the 1st time ever when Raina was traveling in train alone, to achieve what he dreamt of, sleeping on the newspaper spread on the floor with his chest-guard and thigh pad as protection on a chilly night
There were various incidents in his life when he was ragged and made fun of in hostel during his initial training days of cricket
He had to quit and sit back at home because his mates wouldn’t stop pulling him down since he was a better player than everyone else and the coach used to pay more attention to him. He only returned back to his Lucknow hostel when proper security was promised by the management
Only when he came to Mumbai after struggling so much just to attend the cricket training, was he successful to join the cricket team and debuted as one of the best batsmen
He shared an incident from 2011 World Cup when he was playing with Yuvraj Singh and Yuvi said ‘Sambhal ke khelna, out ho gaya toh khatam hai game’. To which Raina replied, ‘Don’t worry, I won’t get out. “Yadi main out ho gaya toh, yeh mera last match hoga. Yuvi smiled and jokingly said, ‘Sirf tera nahi, mera bhi last match hoga!
He also shared an incident when he was very new in the team with MS Dhoni. Raina decided to sleep on the floor because he didn’t have the habit to sleep on a bed. Dhoni was so generous that looking at Suresh, he also decided to sleep down saying, “Mujhe bhi aadat nahi hai.”
No doubt he was doing good in ODI and Test matches, Suresh believes that IPL has changed his life significantly. Managing and coordinating with the players from different countries teaches a lot of things and helps you grow each day
With so many stories to tell and scores to cherish, Raina today has become one of the most renowned cricketers and a person that our younger generation looks at as a role model
In April 2015, Raina married Priyanka Chaudhary, his ladylove from UP who is an IT professional in a bank in Amsterdam
