Fresh content, shorter time span and lesser-known talent is probably what grips us. OTT platforms and the internet have no doubt become an intrinsic part of our lives. And it has become easier for film makers to reach out to a larger audience with their stories. While several popular short films have garnered a lot of praise and attention, here we present a few rare gems.

1. The Gatekeeper
This award-winning short film is directed by Atanu Mukherjee. It is the story of a lone gatekeeper who mans a railway crossing in the middle of nowhere. Other than the few passing trains, solitude is his companion. With just two actors and no dialogues, The Gatekeeper will make you value life and the people in it.
This national award-winner has theatre veterans Sohrab Ardeshir and Anahita Uberoi in the lead. The storyline charts the events in the life of a Parsi woman has recently lost her husband. There is no melodramatic display of grief but the simple dwelling over their time together casts a magic spell. Afterglow grows on you and finds a place in your heart.
In a quiet village, a family can hear crying voices of a baby at odd hours, leaving them petrified. From police investigations to spiritual practices nothing seems to work. As the viewer waits with bated breath for the mystery to unravel, the climax leaves them in splits. Don’t miss this gem in Tulu.
This Malayalam short film is a little over 11 minutes and is directed by Jithin Raj. Those who love reminiscing about their good old childhood days will like this one. Brimming with innocence, simplicity and the beauty of Kerala, Palloty will remind us what unconditional love for a friend is.
A reluctant daughter returns to her home in Kolkata after years of self-imposed exile. But her daughter, born and brought up abroad, is excited about the homecoming. Debi portrays the hues of emotions in a typical Bengali household during Durga Pujo. And it also takes us on a nostalgic culinary trail. Do watch this short directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhary.
6. The Affair
While his wife lies paralyzed in bed, a 52-year-old man has an affair with a woman his daughter’s age. When his family finds out, all hell breaks loose. But what is it they really think? As secrets are uncovered, The Affair, a masterfully crafted short film, will leave you surprised.
7. Aai Shapat
This is a sacred vow and if you take it you aren’t supposed to lie, you just aren’t. A little boy is mighty troubled when his cousin swears a lie on his mother. Aai Shapat is a heart-warming short that will remind you of your childhood days, making you smile instantly. Don’t miss this one directed by Gautam Vaze.
