Dance has been an integral part of almost every culture in the world. It has taken many forms and is constantly evolving with the changing times. Hollywood movies have been capturing this essence for decades now. Although Bollywood does not have many good dance movies to boast about, movies like ABCD (2013) and ABCD 2 (2015) are changing this and ushering Bollywood into a new era where dance movies are given equal status as movies of other genres. 1. Disco Dancer (1982)
One of the best musical films of Bollywood, Disco Dancer, is a movie that spans multiple genres in true Bollywood fashion. It is the story of a street singer who has to struggle a lot to achieve success and then fight an old nemesis of his to save what he has rightfully earned.
2. Dance Dance (1987)
Another Bollywood movie where Mithun da wows the audiences with his dance moves. This is one movie to be truly experienced. It is the story of a brother and sister duo who earn their bread by performing on the streets.
3. ABCD: Any Body Can Dance (2013)
Bollywood’s first modern dance film, ABCD, is the story of Vishnu, a dancer who is portrayed by Prabhu Deva himself, who goes on to form his own troupe after he is thrown out of his dance company. ABCD can be credited for titillating people’s interests in Indian dance movies and kicking off a new genre in its own right.
4. Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997)
Dil Toh Pagal Hai is essentially a story about a love triangle between Rahul, Pooja, and Nisha who are all members of a dance troupe. The movie has a lot dance moves sprinkled between the ups and downs weaved throughout the plot.
5. Step Up (2006)
Step Up is the story of how Tyler and Nora meet and fall in love with each other and encourage each other to follow their passion for dancing. Throw in some sweet dance moves by the ever-sexy Channing Tatum and you’ve got a franchise kickstarting movie in your hands.
6. Happy Feet (2006)
The fate of a little penguin is put to test when he is unable to complete a task upon which their whole society is built - sing; in order to attract a soul mate. Our little penguin, Mumble, however, has a different talent which makes him unique. Mumble is a terrible singer but a brilliant tap dancer. Happy Feet is the story of accepting yourself when no one else does and realizing there’s nothing wrong in being different than others.
7. Footloose (1984)
A teenager who moves to a small town from a big city is in for the biggest culture shock of his life when he is faced with the shocking fact that music and dancing are illegal in this town. Now it is up to this rebellious lad to change the attitude of the town folks.
8. Saturday Night Fever (1977)
This is the story of Tony, a young guy from Brooklyn, who tries to escape the uncertainties surrounding his future by dancing his nights away at a disco. Tony becomes a local sensation due to his cool dance moves but things change when he falls for Stephanie.
9. Magic Mike (2012)
Mike, portrayed by Channing Tatum, is trying to make ends meet anyway he can by doing car detailing jobs, making furniture, etc. But his real talent comes to light at night when he performs as a stripper. The cons of the stripper start weighing him down when he takes a kid under his wing and falls for his sister.
10. La La Land (2016)
La La Land is the story of two people in Los Angeles who fall in love with each other. Things take a sour turn when being together means threatening everything they have worked for so far.
