Meet the Kapoor family of Bollywood

Bollywood has seen the rise of several stars. However, if there is one family that has reigned supreme for generations, it is the Kapoor family. With exceptional performances and memorable movies, this family has played a huge role in taking Bollywood to new heights. 
Here, we take a look at the Kapoor family tree and their key contributions to Bollywood. 
 

Prithviraj Kapoor

The person who has changed the fate of Bollywood, Prithviraj Kapoor is the father of Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Urmila Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor.

Raj Kapoor

Raj Kapoor joined the world of theatre at a very young age after he dropped out of school. He began his film journey in 1944 when he joined Prithvi Theatre. His first movie was Neel Kamal in 1947 followed by the highly-acclaimed Barsaat. In 1946, Raj Kapoor married Krishna and had five children. The Raj Kapoor family consists of Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Rima Kapoor, Ritu Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor.

Shammi Kapoor

The Kapoor family tree would not be complete without one of India’s favourite legends – Shammi Kapoor. He was born in 1931 and became one of the country’s prominent stars with his powerful performances and iconic dance moves. The actor married Geeta Bali in 1955 and was blessed with two kids Aditya and Kanchan. Shammi Kapoor later married Neila Devi after his first wife passed away due to small pox.

Urmila Kapoor

Urmila is the only daughter of Prithviraj Kapoor. She got married to businessman Charanjit Sial and has four children - Anuradha, Priti and Namita and Jatin. Jatin Sial is finding his feet in movies and has worked in several TV series as well as films. 

Shashi Kapoor

Shashi Kapoor is another remembered name in the Indian film industry, and he is the youngest child of Prithviraj Kapoor. He began his acting journey as a child artist but established himself with his lead debut with Dharmputra in 1961. He was highly involved with the Prithvi theatre travelling group through which he met his wife Jennifer Kendal. The couple got married in 1958 but split up a couple of years later. They have three children – Karan, Kunal and Sanjana.

Randhir Kapoor

Randhir Kapoor began his film career as a child artist but made his debut as a hero in the film Kal Aaj Aur Kal in 1971. The actor married actress Babita in 1971, who is also the cousin of late actress Sadhana. The couple was blessed with two daughters, both of whom have found massive success in Bollywood - Karisma and Kareena. 
Even though Raj Kapoor was not in favour of the Kapoor family daughters entering movies, Karisma Kapoor stood her ground and became the first Kapoor woman to become an actress. She was one of the most successful actresses of her time and later tied the knot with industrialist Sanjay Kapur on September 29, 2003. Their union came to an end in 2014. The couple has two children - Samaira and Kiaan.
Kareena Kapoor Khan also followed in her sister’s footsteps and currently enjoys her position as one of Bollywood’s leading actresses. She married actor Saif Ali Khan in 2012 and has one son, Taimur.

Late Rishi Kapoor

The most popular member of the Raj Kapoor family, the Late Rishi Kapoor has been instrumental in his contribution to the Indian film industry. He made waves with his performance in the film ‘Bobby’ at the young age of 20. The late actor dominated the Bollywood industry for several decades and has given several hits. 
Along with professional acclaim, Rishi Kapoor family members are also highly popular in the media. He married his co-star of many films, Neetu Singh, in 1979. They have two children, Riddhima Kapoor and the extremely popular Ranbir Kapoor. 
Ranbir Kapoor is currently one of Bollywood’s leading actors recognised for his stellar performances. He made his debut in 2007 with Saawariya and has since done several iconic roles. He is arguably the more popular child of the Rishi Kapoor family. 
His sister, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni has her own designer jewellery label and married a businessman Bharat Sahni in 2006. They have a daughter Samara.

Ritu Kapoor

Ritu is Raj Kapoor’s elder daughter and was born in 1948. She is the owner of one of India’s prominent insurance firms - Ritu Nanda Insurance Services. Ritu married Rajan Nanda and has two children - Natasha and Nikhil. She also penned a biography about her father in the 1990s which was hugely successful.

Rima Kapoor

Rima is the younger daughter of legend Raj Kapoor. She got married to investment banker Manoj Jain and was blessed with two sons - Armaan and Aadar. Armaan has already started his Bollywood journey. He debuted in 2014 with Lekar Hum Deewana Dil and is currently working as an assistant director. 

Rajiv Kapoor

Rajiv Kapoor is the youngest member of the Raj Kapoor family and got huge recognition for his film Ram Teri Ganga Maili in 1985. He later chose to work behind the scenes as a producer.
