Marathi artists add ‘zaika’ to Bollywood historicals

With Mumbai the epicentre of Bollywood, it’s not surprising that Marathi actors maintain a strong connection with Bollywood. After Bajirao Mastani, it is the turn of Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, where Marathi actors showcased their talent. Here’s a lineup of well-known Marathi actors who regale Hindi audiences with their portrayals in historical sagas. 

1. Vaibhav Tatwawaadi

Vaibhav is relatively lesser known, but he is now making waves. Vaibhav is the male lead in Manikarnika, where he plays the role of soldier Puran Singh. He came into the limelight in Bollywood with his role as Chimaji Appa in Bajirao Mastani. He had earlier acted in Hindi movies such as Lipstick Under My Burkha and Hunterrr.

2. Atul Kulkarni

He has won critical acclaim for his portrayals. Be it Rang De Basanti, Chandni Bar or Natarang, Atul has always impressed. A versatile actor, he has acted in movies made in seven languages. Atul will be seen as the Marathi general Tatya Tope in Manikarnika.

3. Ankita Lokhande

Ankita made her film debut in Manikarnika, where she plays the love interest opposite Vaibhav Tatwawaadi’s character. Ankita is better known as a TV actor. She was paired opposite Sushant Singh Rajput in Zee TV soap Pavitra Rishta. In Manikarnika, she will be seen as Jhalkaribai, who took on the British.

4. Mahesh Manjrekar

Director, actor, writer and producer, he dons several hats. As an actor, he played Chattrapati Shahu Maharaj in the movie Bajirao Mastani. As a director, he’s known for the critically acclaimed Vaastav: The Reality, Astitva and Viruddh... Family Comes First. Mahesh has won a national award and two Star Screen Awards.

5. Yatin Karyekar

Another Marathi gem to make it big in Bollywood. His effortless onscreen portrayals have enabled him to make a mark for himself. He played Krishnaji Bhatt in Bajirao Mastani. Historical movies are not new to him. Yatin also essayed the role of Aurangzeb in the Marathi serial Raja Shivchhatrapati.

6. Milind Soman

He is a successful model, actor, movie producer and now also a role model for fitness and health. Milind essayed the role of Ambaji Pant in Bajirao Mastani. Besides Marathi and Hindi, he has also acted in Tamil and Telugu movies. But he is also respected widely as the man who won the Ironman title and the Ultraman marathon.

7. Durga Khote

No list of Marathi actors in historical movies is complete without her mention. Durga Khote has mostly portrayed North Indian historical characters. The grand old lady of Indian cinema ruled the roost in Bollywood as well as Marathi cinema. She ranks among the top 10 actresses to portray the role of a mother in Hindi cinema. Durga starred in around 200 films and numerous theatre productions. She is known for her roles in Mughal-E-Azam, Maharathi Karna, etc.
