Kapil Sharma is undoubtedly one of the most successful Indian comedians ever. His meteoric rise to fame can only be matched by his witty humor. People know the successful man that Kapil is but not many are aware about the hard work that he had to put in. Let's take a look at how he took over our TVs and our hearts.
Kapil Sharma hails from a lower-middle-class family in Amritsar, Punjab. His father was a police constable and his mother, a homemaker. After battling cancer for 7 years, his father passed away and the burden of winning the bread for his family fell on his shoulders.
During his 10th standard, Kapil took up his first job at a PCO to support his expenses. He also kept performing at night jagratas. When Kapil got into college he started acting in theatre but couldn't afford the fees, however, his performance was appreciated. Due to this many of his colleagues offered to sponsor his education if he performed in youth festivals. On having secured his college fees, he took up Commercial Art and also a diploma in Computer Science.
During an interview with a newspaper, Kapil said "I learnt nothing about either Commercial Art or Computer Science. My father had gotten very unwell at that time and I requested my principal if I could teach theatre to earn money. That's when I learnt a lot as a teacher, as you learn a lot from students while teaching. I used to do histrionics and everyone would love it, so I somehow wanted to just get into the 'Laughter Challenge."
Kapil has stated that he moved to Mumbai with a dream of becoming a singer and since his early days he has had an inclination towards acting and theatre but comedy just happened to him.
On realizing his potential in comedy, he decided to audition for The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. He first tried his luck in the Amritsar auditions where he was rejected. Determined to prove his mettle he went for the Delhi auditions and got selected and then went on to win the show in 2007. It was revealed by the comedian that around the same time his sister's wedding was being planned and they didn't have enough money to be able to afford an engagement ring for his sister. When he won the show, the first thing he did was called up his sister and told her now they can afford the ring.
Kapil kept appearing in many shows as host/anchor or contestant. He also participated in Comedy Circus and went on to win 6 seasons of the hit comedy show. This further bolted his name in the industry and there was looking back after it.
After attaining success in Comedy Circus, Kapil had gained a massive fan following and that's when he decided to try his hands on his own venture. In 2013 he created his production company 'K9 Productions' and made Comedy Nights With Kapil in collaboration with Colors TV. The show made him a household name and he truly became a star. Almost all the biggies of B-Town appeared on his show.
While speaking to a news channel, this is what Kapil had to say about the show "This humour has worked so well as, in this show, we have tried to cater to every viewer, no matter which age group they belong to. We have stayed away from cheap comedy which assures the entire family that they can sit together and watch this show. Also, the jokes that we crack are related to the common people and therefore, resonate with many.”
However, CNWK ended in 2016. His next venture, The Kapil Sharma Show would see him partner with Sony. After the end of the first season TKSS in 2017, Kapil Sharma launched Family Time With Kapil on Sony but the show was put on hiatus after just 3 episodes due to cancellation of shoots. In 2018, the second season TKSS saw the return of Kapil to once again and the show has been going strong ever since.
In 2015, Kapil made his silver screen debut with Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, a romcom. In 2017, his second movie, Firangi, was released. Firangi is a historical drama.
Though Kapil's career graph has had an exponential growth line since the beginning, there have been a few drops here and there recently. Be it the fire on the sets of his show or his rift with his friend and colleague Sunil Grover or his battle with depression. Kapil remained strong throughout, and fate has rewarded him for it. In an interview, he was quoted as saying "There are definitely many physical struggles we endure while working on a TV show. However, all the pains and the struggles disappear when we receive the love that we do from millions out there."
