These different regions are diverse in folklore, traditions, culture but are united by the brotherhood. Along with these many different traditions and cultures, the traditional dances of Jammu and Kashmir vary according to the region. Each of the dance forms of Jammu and Kashmir has its own unique style that makes it special.

Rouf Dance

The Row dance or the Rouf dance of Kashmir is a springtime dance, performed during the festivals like Eid and Ramzan. It is performed by women wearing colourful pherans with heavy zari embroidery. The songs are generally in the question and answers format, with women dancing to the tune in rows, facing each other. The most notable feature of this dance form is the artistic footwork called Chakri in the local language. The popularity of the Rouf dance in Kashmir can be easily measured with its portrayal in the movie “Mission Kashmir.”

Kud Dance

Kud is a Jammu and Kashmir folk dance that is generally performed as thanksgiving and prayer to God. It is performed by twenty to thirty-odd dancers to express their joy. This dance form of Kashmir involves a lot of twisting movements. It is performed in the rainy season on the rhythm and beats of musical instruments like Chhaina, Drums, Narasingha and Flute. People of all ages perform this dance form of Kashmir dressed in their best attire from night till the wee hours of the morning.

Dumhal Dance

Dumhal dance is the most famous dance form in Jammu and Kashmir. Dancers participating in this dance form are dressed in beautiful capes of vibrant colours and conical caps studded with beads and pearls. Dumhal dance of Jammu and Kashmir follows a ritual and can only be performed by the males of Wattal. It is a famous dance of Kashmir performed only on particular locations and set occasions with a banner dug into the ground. Dancers sing in chorus accompanied with drum beats in between.

Bacha Nagma

Bacha Nagma is a traditional dance of Jammu and Kashmir performed during the harvest season. A source of entertainment for people during old age, this dance form of Kashmir is generally enjoyed by young boys dressed up in long, colourful skirts. A group of six to seven dancers sway gracefully to the melodious song sung by the lead dancer.

Dandaras Dance

Dandaras dance is a famous dance of Kashmir mostly performed during the time of Lohri festival. It is a highly professional dance that requires high levels of skills and practice. In this dance form of Kashmir, a model of a peacock made out of bamboo and coloured paper is carried by a group and every performer has a stick. While performing this dance, the performers hit each other's stick in a series of complex movements.

Jagarna Dance

Jagarna is a Jammu and Kashmir folk dance performed only by the females of the bridegroom's side during marriage ceremonies. This famous dance of Kashmir is performed when the Baarat has left for the bride. It is a unique dance form performed on the beats of drums, spoon ticklings and Dogri songs sung by the Dogra ladies.

Chowki Nach is a dance form related to the Jammu region. Crow / Kauwa Dance

Kauwa Dance is a famous dance in Jammu and Kashmir popular among the kids. It is performed in the festival seasons, cultural events and also in birthday parties. Kauwa dance is performed by a talented dancer who imitates a crow and dances with skilful movements, gestures and expressions. The dancer is dressed in black traditional Dogra attire to perform this famous dance of Kashmir.
