A rivalry for the ages, India and Pakistan meet again on 16th June to battle it out in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Over the years, both sides have played each other plenty of times and here are our favourite moments from this epic face-off between neighbouring countries on the pitch.
An expectant crowd gathered in the Middle East to watch India and Pakistan lock horns in 1984. The match was highly anticipated but was a low-scoring one. India could only muster 125 runs and everyone expected a walkover by the Pakistani batting order. However, some brilliant bowling saw India snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, Pakistan could only muster 87 in their entire innings.
Off the last ball of the AustralAsia Cup, Pakistan needed 4 runs. Javed Miandad, already on 110, smashed a six off the last ball to write his name into folklore for all aspiring Pakistani cricketers!
Back in 1997, Saeed Anwar scored 194 runs, at the time the highest individual score in the ODI format. What followed was Pakistan winning comfortably in the Independence Cup.
One of the greatest spinners of all time further cemented his reputation on February 8th 1999. Facing Pakistan in the second innings, Anil Kumble took all ten wickets and wrapped up the match in Team India’s favour. This performance would go into the history books of Indian cricket.
In the same test series as Anil Kumble’s 10-wicket haul, the Eden Gardens hosted nearly 500,000 spectators. This match saw controversy surrounding the Master Blaster – Sachin Tendulkar. In the second innings, the Mumbai-born batsman was declared run-out and an angry crowd stormed the pitch and was in a riot mentality leading to the police having to step in and clear a stand altogether.
Shahid Afridi was the name on everyone’s mind in Kanpur in 2005. India scored 249 and Afridi was sent in as a destroyer of the Indian bowling attack. What unfolded was historic, as Afridi hit 102 runs of just 46 balls to power Pakistan to a historic win against the hosts.
The inaugural T20 Cricket World Cup saw India and Pakistan face off in the group stages. The first-ever super over between the sides saw India come out on top with stunning bowling. In the same tournament, both sides squared off again in the final. With the last ball, India snatched a victory and became the first ever World T20 Champions.
In the last game between these two rivals in the 2018 Asia Cup in Dubai, India emerged victorious by nine wickets with over 10 overs to spare with both Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan scoring a century to decimate the Pakistani bowling attack.
