Have you ever noticed Hollywood releases movies with almost similar plots a few months apart? Sometimes this is just a coincidence but most of the time movies with same plot is a planned move. This is usually done to profit off the success of the other movie with a similar plot line. These kinds of similar movies are known as ‘Twin Films’. Over the years there have been many instances of such identical releases just a few months apart. Let’s take a look at some of the most successful twin films.

1. White House Down / Olympus Has Fallen (2010)

White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen both released just three months apart from one another and share nearly the same plot in which a personnel with a military background saves the President after a group of armoured men take over the White House. However, Olympus Has Fallen performed a little better than White House Down and also managed to get sequels.

2. Antz / A Bug’s Life (1998)

While the plots of both the movies differ, one can easily notice the similarities between the two in terms of the world-building and characters of these movies. Antz is the story of a regular ant who wants to win the affection of his princess. A Bug’s Life tells the story of an inventive ant who enlists the help of circus bugs to fight the grasshoppers who steal the ants’ food.

3. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice / Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Both of these movies pit the superheroes against each other while the world tries to grasp the reality that superheroes exist. Though that is not entirely what both of their plots revolve around, it somewhere cuts close corners. However, when it comes to storytelling, one movie had the edge over the other and it wasn’t Batman v Superman.

4. Friends With Benefits / No Strings Attached (2011)

Both the movies revolve around relationships that are just meant to be physical-only but things change when the leads start falling for each other. Both the movies had a known star cast and performed equally well at the box office.

5. The Prestige / The Illusionist (2006)

Apart from the era they are set in and the use of magic (the sleight of hand kind), the plots of both the movies do differ reasonably well. But since, magic takes the center stage in these movies, it’s hard not to draw similarities between the two. The Prestige tells the story of two rivaling magicians who go to various lengths to beat the other and rise to the top. The Illusionist revolves around a man who decides to become a magician in order to free his ladylove from her royal residence.

6. Armageddon / Deep Impact (1998)

Both are end-of-the-world movies and even the choice of disaster is eerily similar; an asteroid. However, where the movies deviate is the path both of them take to tackle the approaching asteroid. Armageddon enlists the help of an oil driller and his crew to drill a hole on the asteroid and blast it into two halves before it can get close to earth while Deep Impact places its hope in building a series of caves to shield its citizens from the impact of the asteroid.

7. John Wick / The Equalizer (2014)

Two movies about two hitmen who’ve given up their violent ways but are forced back into their old lives when certain events take a violent turn. However, both the films have different cinematography style and tone. The Equalizer managed to make almost double the amount earned by John Wick but both the movies managed to spawn off successful franchises with John Wick achieving somewhat of a cult status.

8. Cop Out / The Other Guys (2010)

Both the movies are buddy cop comedies based on the dysfunctional relationship between the two leads. However the plots of these movies differ a bit from the other but since the focus of these movies is more on their premise rather than their plots, they can be regarded as twin films.

9. After Earth / Oblivion (2013)

The only similarity between the two sci-fi movies is that they feature an earth that was once destroyed and its civilization with it. After Earth tells the story of a father and son who are forced to land on Earth after the alien creature they are carrying on their ship is released and wrecks their ship. Oblivion is the story of a clone, stationed on an earth that has been ravaged by a war by an alien force, who comes face to face with a woman who is the wife of a man he was cloned after. Pretty confusing, huh.

10. Megamind / Despicable Me (2010)

Both of these movies are the coming of age stories of how villains-turned-antiheroes turn heroes, though both of their plots differ from one another. Megamind is the story of a supervillain, who after defeating his archnemesis, a superhero, goes on to create a hero that turns evil and now our supervillain must become a hero to defeat him. Truly the task of a “Megamind” to come up with such a convoluted task. Despicable Me is the story of a villain who adopts three little girls to pull off the biggest heist in history but ends up loving them after the girls start looking at him as their father.
