World Laughter Day is upon us and what better way to celebrate it than to binge on hilarious Bollywood movies that have managed to withstand the test of time and continue to make us laugh regardless of their age. The following movies are in no particular order, they are just our choice of 10 binge-worthy laughter-riot Bollywood movies.
1. Gol Maal (1979)
The Gol Maal that came before the Golmaal (2006) of our generation. Often revered as a classic and one of the best comedy movies of Bollywood, Gol Maal is the story of Ramprasad (Amol Palekar), who has to start lying to his boss to save his job and in the process create a fake twin brother. The movie is a laughter riot which can be experienced with the whole family.
2. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)
The film is a dark satire on the Indian politics and corruption. It is the story of two photographers, portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani, who accidentally witness a murder. What ensues is a dark comedy of how these two try to bring to light the corrupt deeds of the murderers
3. Chashme Buddoor (1981)
Out of the three flatmates, when the nerdy one manages to win a girl’s heart who all three of them were after, the remaining two plot a devious plan to break off their friend’s relationship. A comedy movie that is simple to its core, it's not surprising how relevant its plot still is.
4. Bawarchi (1972)
Fed up with the bickering of the Sharmas, no cook wants to work for them until the multi-talented Raghu (Rajesh Khanna) takes up the job. Everything seems like roses and sunshine for the Sharmas until the all-caring Raghu disappears with the family jewels.
5. Chachi 420 (1997)
A divorcee (Kamal Hasan) disguises himself as an old lady and becomes her own daughter’s caretaker in order to spend more time with her. Trouble begins when his father-in-law starts falling for the fake chachi that Kamal Hasan is pretending to be.
6. Padosan (1968)
A simple guy who has fallen for her fashionable neighbour seeks the help of his friends to impress her while she seems to fall for her music teacher. Padosan is an example of Bollywood at its best, especially considering this film being one of the finest of the golden age of cinema.
7. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
Two good-for-nothing guys try to win the heart of a wealthy heiress but accidentally get involved with a goon who’s trying to kill the heiress. The two however, end up becoming her saviours. This is one of those movies whose potential was realized long after its release but now it has become a cult classic.
8. Hera Pheri & Phir Hera Pheri
No list of the best comedy movies of Bollywood is complete without a mention of Hera Pheri. Both the movies are modern cult-classics and are etched in the memories of their fans. In both the movies, our troublesome trio gets involved with gangsters and ends up saving the day in the most hysterically funny ways possible.
9. Bombay To Goa (1972)
After witnessing a murder, a girl boards a bus departing for Goa in order to escape from the killer. Onboard the bus she comes across a diverse range of people who make her journey fun and the viewer’s journey too much fun.
10. Delhi Belly (2011)
Three roommates inadvertently become the target of a gangster when they mistakenly misplace his diamonds. Delhi Belly is a comedy of errors at its best. It is also as real as it is funny.
