Inspired by Michael Jackson, Prabhu Deva has been called "India's Michael Jackson" for his fast-paced dance movements and there are many songs choreographed by him which have traces of Michael Jackson’s dance style; “Que Sera Sera” from Pukaar being one of them. Following Michael’s footsteps, he’s become one of the most successful dancers of the country, inspiring thousands of other people. Let’s check how he achieved so much here:
This humble dancer-turned-director-turned-actor's name was Shankupani Sundaram when he was born. During the shooting of a film “Vetri Vizha” in 1987, Prabhu Deva’s father Mugur Sunder, a choreographer himself, was busy and asked Prabhu to teach few dance steps to actor Kamal Hasan. That’s how his career as a Choreographer and Dancer started.
Apart from being a great dancer, he was also interested in making films and also acting. His first movie as a hero was in Kadhalan with Nagma. The script was written keeping him in mind. Initially, Madhuri Dixit was approached for the role however she was busy so the role went to Nagma instead. He later got to work with Madhuri for Pukaar.
In one of her interviews, Kajol said ‘It was very difficult to dance along with Prabhu Deva and took us 30 rehearsals and 20 retakes to shoot ‘Vennilave’ (Chanda Re in the Hindi version).’
Prabhu Deva suffers from chronic neck issues. Despite that, he dances it all out. However, he does make sure that the choreography doesn't put much stress on his neck. He is also a very fitness conscious person. He is a vegetarian and doesn’t eat anything after seven in the evening.
Despite being a dancing superstar, Prabhu Deva is not a talkative person and prefers to speak with his moves instead. In 2009, he started his own dance academy in Singapore’s Cecil Street.
Apart from dancing, Prabhu Deva loves to watch cricket in his free time and his favourite batsman is Sachin Tendulkar. When Sachin retired, he dedicated the song “Dhol Tucker” to him.
Prabhu Deva played the lead role in India’s first 3D dance film ABCD (Any Body Can Dance) and post that was awarded the Padma Shree award in 2019 for his contributions to the art.
Prabhu Deva also turned into a lyricist for his film ‘Yang Mang Sang’. The song is titled ‘Ayyanaaru Vandhutaanga Inga Paaru’ and Shankar Mahadevan was the singer. It seems that Prabhu Deva took just 15 minutes and surprised everyone writing the lyrics within this short span of time.
