Sonam Kapoor is a successful actor, an entrepreneur, an endearing fashionista and an opinionated woman. With so many feathers in her hat, she continues to strive harder for perfection and it is clearly evident in all the recent films and ventures she has undertaken. On the occasion of her birthday, we are taking a look at her inspiring journey to the top!
Although Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Sawariyaa received an underwhelming response at the Box Office, it did put the two actors, Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor in the public eye.
After Sawariyaa, the moment that really defined her as the “it” girl of Bollywood was the song “Massakali” from Delhi 6. People fell in love with her girl-next-door charm and the song was a super hit!
Moreover, films like Aisha and I hate Luv Stories also put Sonam in the limelight with other mainstream actors and she soon started gaining the recognition every newcomer dreams of.
Her early fashion leaned more towards ultra feminine, less risqué, outfits that were glamorous enough but nothing like the glamour quotient her outfits carry today. From pencil skirts to gowns and red lips, Sonam Kapoor wore it all with confidence.
Raanjhanaa’s release in 2013 changed everything for Sonam Kapoor. Before Raanjhanaa, Sonam was only known for her romantic comedies, and no one ever expected her to do the complex and seemingly serious character of “Zoya” in Raanjhanaa.
But defying all expectations she took up the role and nailed it completely. The film was critically acclaimed and Sonam’s acting skills were highly appreciated.
Soon after Raanjhanaa, she gave the audience another character they couldn’t help but love in Bhag Milkha Bhag and established herself as an actor who could effortlessly carry any role!
And who can forget her bubbly an eccentric character of a physiotherapist from the audience favourite “Khoobsurat”. The film not only had some wonderful performances but also earned her a Filmfare Best Actress Nomination.
During this time of Sonam’s career when she was experimenting with roles and scripts, her fashion also reflected her conviction to do something different.
Her looks were fresh, sharp and well put together and sometimes very similar to the characters she was playing.
A lot of Bollywood celebrities have also admitted that Sonam was one of the first actors to promote the whole you-don’t-need-the-red-carpet-to-dress-up culture amongst celebrities and made everyone take fashion very seriously!
In 2015, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo became one of the biggest blockbuster hits of the year and the title track made it into every wedding playlist in the country.
But no one was ready for what was coming next.
Sonam’s 2016 film Neerja was received with enormous amounts of love and appreciation. Her portrayal of a real life hero was authentic, convincing and heart wrenching. It was considered to be one of the best films of the year and it even bagged her a National Award.
Her two recent films Sanju and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga have also been critically acclaimed and saw enormous Box Office returns.
With the growing success of her films, her fashion choices have only gotten bolder and more risqué.
She is very active and vocal on social media and never misses an opportunity to post the behind the scenes of her looks. This is where her fans get the exclusive sneak peek into all her new looks before it even hits the red carpet.
She also runs an app which gives fans even more access to behind the scenes of everything she does!
In 2017, with a goal to turn her love for fashion into something bigger and tangible she launched a fashion label with her sister Rhea Kapoor and soon took over everyone’s wardrobe!
This business venture has only grown stronger and better since it was launched and has established Sonam as a savvy entrepreneur as well.
