Not much beats the glitz and glamour of Hindi movies when it comes to entertainment. But did you know that Bollywood is heavily inspired by regional cinema? Here are 10 Bollywood blockbusters that were remakes of regional movies and were every bit as successful as the originals.

1. Wanted (Hindi) – Pokiri(Telugu)

PuriJagannadh’s potboiler starring Mahesh Babuasan undercover cop infiltrating the mafia was a superhit. Prabhu Deva remade it as Wanted with Salman Khanwho was electrifying as the cop masquerading as the violent contract killer. Wanted was a super hit and marked Salman’s resurgence in Bollywood.

2. Rowdy Rathore(Hindi) – Vikramarkudu (Telugu)

Rowdy Rathore was a remake of a Telugu action flick about a doppelganger avenging the injustice meted out to his look-alike. Akshay Kumar seamlessly slipped into the characters of the honest cop and a petty thief. Gravity-defying stunts, elaborate song-and-dance numbers and power-packed action sequencesensuredRowdy Rathore was the perfect mass entertainer.

3. Ghajini(Hindi) – Ghajini (Tamil)

A hero with short-term memory loss trying to avenge the murder of his lady love! What a unique story, right? Aamir Khan played the lead in the remake of Suriya’sromantic psychological thriller.Aamir’sphysical transformation with his eight-pack abs and the tonsured look was the talk of the town during the movie’s release.

4. Saathiya(Hindi) – Alaipayuthey (Tamil)

Both Alaipayuthey and Saathiya had Mani Ratnam’s class written all over it. His ode to young romance was not your usual ‘boy-meets-girl-and-lives-happily-ever-after’ story. The emotions and the petty fights that the newly-wed couple goes through resonated well with audiences.

5. Ready (Telugu) – Ready(Hindi)

This Tollywood romantic action-comedy was a runaway hit and was remade in many languages including Hindi. Salman Khan wowed audiences with his stylish and slick act. The film was also famous for its chartbusters including ‘Character Dheela’ and ‘Dhinka Chika.’

6. TereNaam (Hindi) – Sethu (Tamil)

Vikram is a troubled youngster who falls in love with the daughter of a priest, but the love story meets a tragic end. Sethu was apparently inspired by true events. Debutant Bala’s romantic drama was remade as TereNaamandit has been labeled Salman Khan’s best performance. A definite must-watch for all Salman fans!

7. Singham (Hindi) – Singam (Tamil)

Ajay Devgn shone in this high-octane action movie as an honest cop taking on the establishment riddled with corruption. Singham had everything that the audience could ask for from a commercial entertainer: eye-popping stunts, power-packed confrontations, powerful dialogues and a huge dollop of heroic grandeur!“Aatamaajhisatakliaahe” captured the nation’s imagination.

8. BhoolBhulaiyaa (Hindi) – Manichitrathazhu (Malayalam)

Priyadarshan remade this psychological thriller about a woman with multiple personality disorder. Akshay Kumar played the role of the fun-loving psychiatrist in BhoolBhulaiyaawho is asked to investigate mysterious occurrences. Akshay Kumar steals the show with his goofy portrayal of the psychiatrist.

9. Drishyam (Hindi) – Drishyam (Malayalam)

Ajay Devgn played the legendary Mohanlal’s role in this thriller about a man who will go to any lengths to protect his family. Ajay is extremely compelling as the ‘chauthi pass’ middle-class cable operator who manages to trick the cops.

10. Hera Pheri (Hindi) – Ramji Rao speaking (Malayalam)

Priyadarshan remade this comic movie about three unemployed people who get involved in a kidnapping in order to make a fast buck.Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar, and Suniel Shetty’s hilarious act kept the audience in splits.
