Often, we’ve heard the phrase, “this movie was way ahead of its time!”, and we think of it as a consolation prize for bombing at the box office. This is in fact semi-true because a bunch of great Bollywood movies have gone unnoticed and therefore, performed horribly at the box office. It could either be because of lack of good promotions, or being released at the same time as another popular movie, or because the plot was simply ahead of its time and people were unable to grasp it.
Either way, a bunch of these combinations have led to a huge list of underrated Bollywood movies that deserve recognition. Here, we have curated a list of good Bollywood movies that went unnoticed and you need to watch them again ASAP!
1. Made in India
One of the top underrated Bollywood movies starring Rajkummar Rao and Mouni Roy, it achieves a feat in showing the framework of toxic masculinity, created by society and how adamant they are to uphold it. This Mikhil Musale creation is full of stellar performances and great dialogues, and is a must-watch for all!
Not many of us might have heard of this movie but it is definitely one of the top underrated Bollywood movies. This movie has a 2-year old for its lead and a nerve-racking plot for its theme. Though it was recognised internationally, and it also won the Grand Prize for Best Feature Film in the International category, the movie went unnoticed at our box office. Based on a true story, Pihu gets trapped inside her own house with no escape. This movie is definitely not for the light hearted but you must give it a chance!
With a cast consisting of Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, and Vicky Kaushal; you would think this film would not be on any list that talks about good Bollywood movies that went unnoticed, but unfortunately it is. In addition to a stellar cast, this movie has a way of showing the fickle mindset of our generation in an honest way which does not come off as condescending in any way. Not to mention that it is accompanied by a brilliant soundtrack that will surely hit you in the feels!
Another great movie starring Taapsee Pannu, this movie should’ve been bigger than what it is. This Anubhav Sinha movie is a reflection of our current society and was meant to connect with all. However, an unenthusiastic audience led for it to bomb at the box office and end up on this list of top underrated Bollywood movies. Once you do watch the movie, you will immediately connect to the storyline and Taapsee’s riveting performance is enough to give anyone goosebumps!
Omerta’s failure is a direct result of our country’s fragile sentiments. This Hansal Mehta crime drama, gives us Rajkummar Rao in the role of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British-Pakistani terrorist. While it received great reviews by critics, it unfortunately became a target of many controversies.
We’ll be honest, we hadn’t even heard of this movie until recently and it almost pains us to put a poignant movie starring two brilliant actors, Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Koechlin on a list that talks about underrated Bollywood movies, but here we are. This movie tells us the message of death and the horrid shape of our healthcare system. There is no reason why such a beautiful and poetic movie failed at the box office and any consolation would be patronising this movie.
7. Meri Pyaari Bindu
An unusual love story, and an even more unconventional ending for a Bollywood movie. This beautifully directed movie deals with the realities of love and the honest depiction of a heartbreak and it does so, poetically. Ironically, in the movie there is a line that says, “Love stories with sad endings don’t work with people”, and maybe that’s why, today it is one of the best underrated Bollywood movies. Even so, it deserves a shot. We can resort to Disney movies for unrealistic love stories that end in a “happily ever after”. Now is the time where we need movies that reflect on the fact that sometimes there is just a happy middle and a sadder end, and that is okay.
8. Baar Baar Dekho
This is one of our personal favourites and we mean it when we say that this movie was ahead of its time. It dealt with an innovative concept that combined mystique, love, and the concept of free will, all in one. No movie talks about the consequence of one single action that can alter your entire life. Had this movie been released a few years ago and the execution a little more refined, you wouldn’t find it on any list that talks about underrated Bollywood movies. Not to mention the sound track and performances by Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra makes us wish it was released again.
9. Do Dooni Chaar
Rishi Kapoor has given us a number of great films that have often fared exceptionally well at the box office. However, this specific movie, though a brilliant watch, was let down at the box office. One of the rare movies where we get to see Rishi Kapoor and his real life love, Neetu Singh, give us “couple goals” on screen as well.
10. Luck By Chance
Definitely one of the best underrated Bollywood movies, Luck By Chance is one of a kind. Showing the realities of what struggling in Bollywood for new actors is really like, and the exploitation of people by the fake promise of work, and the classic, Nepotism winning against talent, this is definitely a must watch for those who haven’t seen it already!
Billu is definitely one of the best underrated Bollywood movies. With Shah Rukh Khan and Irrfan Khan as leads and acting together on screen, this movie should’ve done well just for this reason. The compelling story line of a Barber reuniting with an old friend who is now famous, adds the gold shine on the trophy it deserves.
12. Beyond The Clouds
A movie made by a director who doesn’t even speak Hindi and manages to make an honest depiction of Mumbai slums and the lives of the people living there is a remarkable feat and should be appreciated more. The lead actors do a phenomenal job and their performance is sure to give you goosebumps. Watch Beyond The Clouds, one of the to[ underrated Bollywood movies now, if you haven’t already!
Karthik Calling Karthik
The only Bollywood movie so far that does a compelling and accurate depiction of schizophrenia. This psychological thriller is one of the top underrated Bollywood movies, with Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone in the lead. The story line is full of twists and Farhan’s acting alone is compelling enough to watch this movie!
