3. Zanjeer (1973)

His portrayal of Inspector Vijay on a mission to end the dominance and crimes of Teja (Ajit Khan) was phenomenal and became a massive rage among the audiences. Taking a break from typical Bollywood movies of the time that focussed on the hero mostly in the romantic sense, director Prakash Mehra, portrayed Big B as an action hero who was not afraid of a fight. 4. Don (1978)

A hardened criminal and a simple man from the village, these two characters are poles apart and were portrayed flawlessly by the actor. One of the most popular Amitabh Bachchan movies, Don soon became a cult favourite and is loved even today. The movie’s popularity can be gauged by the massive box-office collections when it was released and the dialogues that are still used as punchlines at parties. The actor was also awarded the Filmfare Award for the Best Actor for the movie.

5. Amar Akbar Anthony (1977)

Almost everyone remembers the hilarious scene when a drunk Anthony (Amitabh Bachchan) is applying a bandaid to the mirror instead of himself. Easily regarded as one of the best Amitabh Bachchan movies, Amar Akbar Anthony is a great entertainer that received huge commercial and critical success. Director by Manmohan Desai, this movie is the classic Bollywood tale of brothers separated at birth, reuniting when they are older. The film also stars Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor in lead roles. 6. Deewaar (1975)

‘Mere paas maa hai’ – these four words are probably the most recognised in India and have been referenced in several movies, memes and punchlines. When talking about the top movies of Amitabh Bachchan, Deewar definitely deserves a mention. The movie, directed by Yash Chopra, portrayed Big B as an anti-hero that the audiences found themselves rooting for till the end. 7. Kabhi Kabhie (1976)

This movie reunited Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor after their powerful performances in Deewaar but in a completely different light. A mature movie portraying the timelessness of love and the obligations of relationships, Kabhi Kabhie is one of the most memorable films by director Yash Chopra. The actor portrays a romantic character with a soft and vulnerable side. While Big B was already recognised by the audience as the ‘angry young man’, this movie showcased him in a much softer and vulnerable role. Not only was Big B’s character highly praised but so was the movie.
