This 50-year-old energetic actor celebrates his birthday on September 9, and so it’s the perfect time to flip back a few pages of his life. We take a look at Akki’s journey before Bollywood – let’s get to know him better!
Akshay obtained a black belt in Taekwondo during his teens in Mumbai. He was quick to understand his calling and dropped out of college to learn Muay Thai in Bangkok. Muay Thai or Thai boxing is a combat sport that develops core strength and mobility. Akshay continued to pursue his passion for the sport and became a martial arts trainer after returning to Mumbai. Little did he know that his extraordinary talent would help him become one of the biggest stars of Bollywood!
During his stay in Bangkok, Akshay worked as a waiter and a chef at a food stall to make ends meet. He still considers cooking a stress buster even today. He also used to do street fighting to earn a few extra bucks. Apart from this, Akshay briefly worked as a spot boy and sold jewellery in different Indian cities. His rich experiences of working on odd jobs have helped him grow as a person and focus on his career better.
Akshay’s real name is Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia and he was born in Amritsar. He was known to be a performer since a young age. Akshay’s love for dancing was not a secret to anyone, and soon he was recognised as a dancer among his peers. When his father asked about him career aspirations, Akshay said that he wanted to become an actor.
Akshay stepped into Bollywood with a minor role in the movie Aaj. Kumar Gaurav played the lead role in that movie and his character was named Akshay. This spurred our beloved superstar to change his name from Rajiv Bhatia to Akshay Kumar.
Akshay was introduced to the world of modelling by an aspiring photographer who he met in Mumbai. Akshay worked as an assistant photographer for 18 months without pay to shoot his portfolio. This helped him bag a few assignments. However, his destiny changed only after he missed a flight for an ad shoot. Akshay was very disappointed about missing out on the opportunity. This is when he began approaching producers in Bollywood. And as luck would have it, he finally got a lead role in a movie!
