My Name Is Khan, the film directed by Karan Johar, is celebrating 9 years of its release today. This film united Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan after 9 long years, feeding the audience with their craving to see SRK and Kajol together again. The film created magic and attained a lot of attention around the world, making it one of the greatest hits of 2010. Let’s look at how KJo and other celebs celebrate this anniversary of the film.
In the film, SRK plays the role of a Muslim guy, Rizwan Khan, who is suffering from Asperger's syndrome. The movie portrays his journey of meeting with the president of the United States.
Shah Rukh was so dedicated and involved that he used to up his body language and his speech patterns as an Asperger’s patient. Even when he was at home, he would interact with his family and friends just as Rizwan would do in the film.
Mandira aka Kajol was seen as a single mother who gets married to Rizwan. The chemistry of the two takes a flip when Mandira’s kid gets killed after he was bullied continuously for having a Muslim father post the 11th September attacks on the Twin Towers of New York City.
Before Kajol, Kareena Kapoor was Karan’s choice for the role of Mandira. Even Aamir Bashir who was to play the role of Zakhir Khan (Rizwan Khan’s brother) in the film, was later replaced by Jimmy Shergill since Aamir was denied a USA visa.
Karan Johar got very emotional and went on to share his thoughts about the film on his Twitter handle. Not only Karan but also other celebrities like Varun Dhawan, who was also the Assistant Director for the film shared the post and said, “#9YearsOfMNIK a film I learnt so much on. It practically changed my life. Also, this is the only picture I have where @abhivarman is smiling. Thank u @karanjohar.”
To which Karan replied saying, “So many brilliant memories I have !! Specially of you signing autographs when you were an AD ( not a star) and of SID’s stoic silences in the face of adversity!!! And of course of @abhivarman smiling!! A rare sight!!!!”
Siddharth Malhotra, who was also an assistant, shared the memory of the film stating that working on this film was his best learning and his best experiences. He also thanked Karan for giving him this opportunity.
