Onam is the harvest festival celebrated by the Malayalis with great pomp and enthusiasm. The festival commemorates King Mahabali and his return to his kingdom. It is a 10-day long celebration marked by several fun festivities like decorating the house, bat racing, exchanging gifts, leopard masquerade dance, etc.

The festival holds a lot of significance in Hindu culture. It is one of the major festivals that is known for its history, grandeur, celebrations and the highlight of this festival is the grand feast known as Onam Sadhya. Onam Sadhya, which means ‘banquet’ in Malayalam is a multi-course vegetarian meal that features over 24 dishes on a banana leaf.

Tangy and flavourful, Sambar is one of the must-have Onam Sadhya recipes. It is an Onam special food that is healthy and will give the authentic Onam experience. Follow the Sambar recipe given below to make it at home-


Eggplant / Brinjal - 3 stem, removed 
Toor Dal - 1 cup
Tamarind - ½ cup
Refined Oil - 1 tbsp
Chana Dal - ½ cup
Red Chilli - 1
Coconut - ½ tbsp, grated
Baby Onions - 8
Turmeric - ¼ tsp, powdered
Salt - ½ tsp
Fenugreek Seeds - 1 pinch
Coriander Seeds - 1 tsp
Garlic - 2 cloves

For Tempering:-

Mustard Seeds - ½ tsp
Curry Leaves - A handful



  1. To make Sambar, firstly, heat oil over medium flame in a frying pan. Once the oil is hot enough, add fenugreek seeds, chana dal, coriander seeds, dry red chilli, 2 baby onions, garlic and grated coconut to it. Fry the ingredients for a minute or so. Once done, remove it from the flame and allow it to cool. Then, grind all these ingredients in a blender and keep them aside till further use.
  2. Now, heat a little oil in a frying pan over a medium flame again. Saute the baby onions and brinjals for a minute or two. Add the pureed tamarind to the pan followed by salt, turmeric powder, onions and brinjals. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  3. Next, add the ground masala, toor dal and bring to a boil again on low flame. To enhance the taste of Sambar, you can dry roast the spices with some curry leaves, grind them and add.
  4. Meanwhile, add refined oil to a separate pan and fry the tempering ingredients. To make it authentic, you can replace the refined oil with coconut oil.
  5. One of the best Onam dishes, Sambar, is now ready! Serve it with steamed rice, idli or dosa.

Tomato Pachadi

A perfect balance of sweet and spice, Tomato Pachadi is an Onam special food. It is one of the best Onam Sadhya recipes that can be paired with Appam, Neer Dosa and Lemon Rice. Follow the instructions to make Tomato Pachadi given below-


Tomato - 10
Tamarind Juice - ½ cup
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Green Chilli - 4
Mustard Oil - ½ tbsp
Coconut - 1
Turmeric - 1 tsp
Salt - As required
Water - As required


  1. To make Tomato Pachadi, firstly, wash the tomatoes in running water and cut them into small pieces. Boil them in hot water for about 5 minutes and keep it aside.
  2. Next, heat another pan on medium flame and add the tamarind juice along with a little water, salt and turmeric to it. Meanwhile, in a food processor, grind coconut along with mustard seeds and green chillies to form a thick paste.
  3. Add this coconut-chilli paste to the boiled tomatoes and boil this mixture on a medium flame for another 5 to 10 minutes. Once done, remove the pan from the flame.
  4. Now, heat mustard oil on low flame. When the oil is hot enough, temper the mustard seeds and quickly switch off the flame. Pour this tempering on the prepared mixture.
  5. One of the best Onam dishes, Tomato Pachadi, is now ready!

A mixed vegetable treat, Avial is a traditional South Indian dish and one of the most delicious Onam Sadhya recipes. An interesting fact to note about this Onam special food is that it was invented by Bhima, one of the five Pandavas. Avial is traditionally enjoyed with plain rice and Sambar. Follow the instructions below to make Avial.


Cucumber - 1 cup
Pumpkin - ½ cup
Water - 3 cups
Red Chilli Powder - ½ tsp
Green Chilli - 4
Yogurt / Curd - ½ cup, beaten
Salt - As required
Carrot - 1 cup
Bananas - ½ cup, unripe
Turmeric Powder - ½ tsp
Coconut - 1 cup
Cumin Seeds - 2 pinches
Coconut Oil - 2 tsp
Curry Leaves - 10



  1. To make Avial, firstly, take a grinding jar and add red pepper powder, coconut and green chillies to it. Next, please add cumin seeds and 4-5 tbsp water to it. Grind together till a smooth consistent paste is formed.
  2. Now, soak the vegetables in lukewarm water with a pinch of turmeric for about 30 minutes. Then, wash the unpeeled vegetables in running water and cut them into thin slices in a large bowl. Now, take a shallow pan and heat it on a medium flame.
  3. Next, heat water in a shallow pan. Add sliced vegetables in water and then add turmeric powder to it. Sprinkle some salt and mix the ingredients well. Once the vegetables are tender and nicely cooked, add the previously made paste and mix it well. Cover the pan with a lid.
  4. Cook for another minute, till the vegetables completely absorb the coconut masala paste. Then, add yoghurt and toss the vegetables well. Cook for another minute to incorporate the ingredients well. Garnish with coconut oil and curry leaves.

Buttermilk - 3 cups, thick
Yam - 2 cups, thinly sliced
Raw Bananas - 2 cups, thinly sliced
Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
Fenugreek Seeds - 1 tsp, powdered
Black Pepper Powder - 1 tsp
Coconut - ½ cup (grated + grinded with 2 green chillies)
Salt - As required
Coconut Oil - 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds - ¼ tsp
Curry Leaves - A handful



  1. To make Kalan Kerala Curry, start by cooking yam and bananas in buttermilk with turmeric powder till they get soft.
  2. Next, add salt, the grated paste of coconut to it and cook for a few minutes.
  3. Now, in a pan, heat the coconut oil. Once the oil is hot enough, add mustard seeds and curry leaves to it and stir for a few minutes.
  4. Add the buttermilk mixture to the pan followed by black pepper and fenugreek seeds. Mix all the ingredients well.

Palada Payasam

Palada Payasam is one of the must-include Sadhya recipes in your feast. It is an easy dessert made with rice and milk and is loved by all. Your festival will surely be incomplete without this Onam special food. Follow the Palada Payasam recipe given below to try it at home-


Rice - 300 gms, uncooked
Coconut Oil - 2 tsp
Milk - 4 litre
Sugar - 800 gms + 50 gms


  1. To make Palada Payasam, firstly, wash the rice well and grind it into small pieces.
  2. Now, add sugar and the coconut oil to it, and mix it till it becomes thinner than dosa batter but thick enough to be spread on a leaf.
  3. Tear the banana leaves into five portions and remove the fibres. Spread the batter on each leaf,  flatten and smooth it out. This is called ada.
  4. In a vessel, boil some water and add the flattened ada into it. Once the adas are cooked well, turn off the flame and drain the water. Leave it to cool.
  5. Once the adas come to room temperature, gently, separate each ada from the leaf.
  6. Cut each of the adas into very small pieces.
  7. In a vessel, boil milk and add the sugar. Continue boiling until it thickens.
  8. Once done, add the ada pieces into it. Combine the two thoroughly.
  9. One of the best Onam dishes, Palada Payasam is ready!

Winter Melon / Ash Gourd - 1 cup, thinly sliced
Green Chilli - 2, slices
Coconut Milk - ¾ cup
Coconut Oil - 2 tsp
Pumpkin - 1 cup, thinly sliced
Black-eyed Beans - 3 tbsp
Salt - ½ tsp



  1. To make Olan, firstly, cook the beans in a pressure cooker till tender, drain and keep aside.
  2. Steam the ash gourd, pumpkins and green chillies till they are soft.
  3. Once done, mix in the cooked beans and salt followed by a little water. When the mixture starts to boil, add the coconut milk and turn off the heat.
  4. Now, heat the coconut oil in a pan and put some fenugreek seeds, whole red chillies, mustard seeds, and crushed curry leaves in it.
  5. When the mustard starts to sputter, spread it over the cooked Olan.
  6. One of the best Onam dishes, Olan, is now ready to serve!

  1. To make Thoran, firstly, grind together all the ingredients in a mixer.
  2. Now, heat oil in a pan over medium flame and add the curry leaves and mustard seeds. When it begins to sputter, add the grated carrots and saute them lightly. Add the ground spiced paste to this mixture and sprinkle a little salt and water.
  3. Cook it over medium flame with the lid closed, until the water evaporates. You can also add beans along with the carrots for variation.
  4. One of the best Onam dishes, Thoran, is now ready!
