Young Indians to watch out for during the Commonwealth Games 2018

With the Commonwealth Games underway in Gold Coast, Australia; the 225-member brigade from India is competing in games varying from Badminton to Parasports. With a good mix of youth and experience, the hopes are high for India. Let’s look at some of the athletes who are considered favourites to bring home the glory.

1. PV Sindhu (Badminton)
Currently a World number 3 in the BWF World Ranking, PV Sindhu is a professional badminton player, competing in the CWG 2018 – Badminton Singles. PV Sindhu, who is the flag-bearer for India, is a formidable favourite to win a gold at the CWG 2018. Sindhu, who was adjudged joint Badminton Player of the Year at this year’s Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA), won a bronze medal in Glasgow in 2014 and would be looking to better it at the CWG 2018.

2. Neeraj Chopra (Javelin Throw)
This 21-year-old athlete is representing India in Javelin throw at the CWG 2018. In the year 2016, Neeraj won a gold medal at the IAFF World U20 Championship and the South Asian Games, where he equalled the Indian national record. In 2017, he added another medal to’ his collection by winning a gold in the Asian Athletic Championship. Being a World Junior Record holder, Neeraj is primed to win a gold at this years’ CWG.

3. Vikas Krishan Yadav (Boxing)
He has won a gold medal in the 2010 Asian Games in the Lightweight category. From being an understudy to Vijendra Singh to competing in the CWG, Vikas Krishan is definitely someone who could bring gold home to India.

4. Manu Bhaker (Shooting)
She is the youngest Indian to win a gold medal at the 2018 ISSF World Cup. Unbelievable yet true, Manu Bhaker, who has won 9 gold medals at the National games held at Kerala, started taking professional training just a few years ago. Manu will definitely shoot for the gold medal at this years’ CWG.

5. Mohammad Anas (Track and Road Athletics)
In June 2016 at the Polish Athletics Championship in Poland, Mohammad Anas broke the national record in 400 metres clocking 45.40 seconds. This young athlete, who qualified for IAAF in the Bahamas after clocking 45.32 seconds in the Indian Grand Prix, is in the running for a gold medal at the CWG.
