The Telugu star you probably didn’t know about Why Kaikala Satyanarayana is the pride of the Telugu film industry?

gmail

A career spanning six decades. Over 700 films. 59 movies which completed silver jubilee. 10 which completed golden jubilee and around 10 films that ran for a year or more. You would think that these stats are a culmination of multiple actors. But, they are not. They are all the work of the great Telugu star Kaikala Satyanarayana. On his 83rd birthday, we present five interesting facts about the superstar:

1. A forgettable debut/ His debut movie tanked at the box office
Satyanarayana went to Madras (now Chennai) in the 1950s to work in movies. He bagged the lead role in Sipayi Kuturu (1959) thanks to his striking personality and deep voice. But as luck would have it, the film bombed at the box office. Satyanarayana had to settle for small roles in subsequent films.

2. He made a comeback as a villain
The sudden demise of R Nageswara Rao left a void in the Telugu film industry for negative roles. Enter Kaikala Satyanarayana. He made his comeback with the role of an antagonist in Kanakadurga Pooja Mahima (1960). Telugu cine-goers welcomed Satyanarayana with open arms and lauded his versatility.

3. He was a doppelganger for the legendary NT Rama Rao
Many people noticed that Satyanaryana bore an uncanny resemblance to NT Rama Rao, the biggest star of the Telugu film industry. In fact, he and NTR had the same height and physique. This led to Satyanarayana playing NTR’s body double in several films. He could be easily spotted in the climax of Ramudu Bheemudu (1964), as a stand in for NT Rama Rao.

4. Satyanarayana was a versatile actor
While Satyanarayana wanted to do more challenging roles, he was being typecast as a villain. All that changed with his emotional performance in Ummadi Kutumbam in 1967. Satyanarayana was no longer a synonym for villainous characters, but an actor who could play any role with aplomb.

5. His many accolades/ His award studded career
From the Nandi Award for the Best Feature Film in 1994 to the Raghupati Venkaih Award in 2011, Satyanarayana has received various accolades. The latest feather in his cap, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award 2018 – South, perfectly sums up Kaikala Satyanarayana’s distinguished and celebrated career.
