The Meghalayan Dance Festival You Need To Know About

The famous Nongkrem Dance Festival is a five day festival celebrated by the Khasi tribe. The ceremony is performed by the Syiem of Kyurem (tribe) to appease the Gods of the ruling clan.

It is celebrated in the ‘Smit’ town of Shillong as a thanksgiving festival to goddess Ka Blei Synshar for a good harvest of the season

The festival is celebrated in the autumn season that occurs in the month of November and sometimes in May.

3. How is it celebrated?
Drums and pipes are played continuously to mark the occasion. Young unmarried girls perform ’Ka Shad Kynthei’, and the men perform ‘Ka Shad Mastieh’, both the songs relating to harvest and fertility

4. How do they dress up?

Women wear fine costumes, bedecked with gold and silver crowns on which lovely yellow or red flowers are placed which signifies the glory and dignity of the Khasi society. Men dance with open swords in one hand and white yak-hair on the other symbolising a man’s defence.
