Five simple ways to reduce the use of plastic and improve the health of your family and the environment


The world produces over 300 million tonnes of plastic every year. Around 91 percent of plastic waste does not get recycled. It ends up becoming trash that clog drains, waterways and seas, affecting human and animal health. To draw people’s attention towards this alarming issue, the theme for this year’s World Environment Day is ‘beat plastic pollution’. When it comes to preserving the environment, every action counts! Therefore, let’s have a look at some simple ways of reducing plastic waste.

1. Always carry a bag
Whenever you’re stepping out, it’s best to have a bag handy. The impulsive shopper in you may get tempted to buy that new chocolate in the nearby store or some luscious fruits from a vendor. So always carry a bag wherever you go — be it for grocery, apparels or anything else. Invest in a stylish and spacious bag if you’re embarrassed to carry a boring jhola.

2. Use metallic or glass containers
Giving up your favourite plasticware can be a tough call. But you need to get rid of them; the earlier the better. Use steel or glass containers to store your food. We all know that re-heating food in plastic boxes can be quite harmful. Make sincere attempts to minimise your plastic usage in the kitchen. By doing so, you’ll be contributing towards improving your health and that of the environment.

3. Mind what you eat
Did you know that every year humans create thousands of tonnes of plastic pollutants that come out from the mouth? Well, blame it on chewing gums! The synthetic gum base material used for making chewing gums elastic and sticky do no good to our body. Moreover, the blobs of gum trashed add to the world’s plastic disposal problem. Consider having peppermint tablets or fennel seeds (saunf) for fresh breath.


4. Switch to alternatives
Look around for non-plastic options for things which are used on a regular basis. Start with saying no to plastic water bottles. Always carry a bottle that can be refilled. Similarly, instead of using a plastic disposable razor, use a razor with replaceable blades. Switch to reusable cloth options for a kid’s nappy; disposable diapers are unhealthy for the kid and the environment

5. Avoid plastic packaging
Following this sincerely would be a huge step towards preserving the environment. When buying items in a store, be pro-active and ask the salesperson to avoid packing in plastic. Similarly, request for zero-plastic packaging when you order online. This will not only make you feel good, but also encourage others to take up the responsibility of saving the environment
