Five Hindi movies that tell great war stories


Wars are fertile ground for stories of love, separation, patriotism, sacrifice and suffering. Globally, movies based on wars and war heroes have been huge successes. And in Indian cinema, stories that have the India-Pakistan wars as a backdrop have always struck a chord in people’s hearts. The upcoming spy thriller – Raazi – showcases the story of a real-life spy during wartime. Slated for a May release, the movie is expected to hook audiences with its power-packed performances. Meanwhile, let’s look at some popular Hindi movies set on the premise of the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

1. Border
J.P. Dutta’s multi-starrer war film, Border, is etched in our minds forever. It is based on the Battle of Longewala during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971. The movie aptly portrays the tough and sensitive sides of soldiers and their families. Even now, two decades after its release, watching Border evokes intense patriotism and love for our country.

2. 16 December
Pakistan signed the document that liberated Bangladesh on 16 December 1971. The title of this film is based on the date. The story revolves around a Pakistani officer’s plans to bomb New Delhi on 16 December 2001. This gripping spy thriller keeps the audiences glued to their seats as Indian commandos foil the terrorists’ plans.

3. 1971
Based on a true story, this movie depicts how six Indian soldiers try to escape after being captured by the Pak army. The courage of our soldiers as they persevere with their plan, despite challenges, is inspiring. The movie is a tribute to the countless unsung heroes of our wars and a salute to their sacrifices.

4. Gunday
Thousands of families were separated during the war for Bangladesh’s independence. Gunday presents a fictitious account of two friends displaced after the 1971 war. It shows how wars result in loss of identities and leads people into a life of crime. The movie touches upon the challenges faced by refugees and their struggle for survival.

5. The Ghazi Attack
This underwater war movie is inspired by true events that took place in 1971, when Pakistan’s submarine PNS Ghazi enters Indian waters. PNS Ghazi sinks off the coast of Visakhapatnam. The movie highlights the Indo-Pak conflict in the area, and the courageous efforts of the Indian navy to save INS Vikrant.
