5 Bollywood movies that went beyond and made us aware about AIDS


Bollywood is known for it’s remarkable movies. It has given us so many films with a strong message that they want to convey to the audience. In honour of World AIDS day, we’ve compiled a list of few movies that went out of their way to spread the social awareness

1. Nidaan (2000)
Nidaan (2000) is an Indian family drama about a girl who acquires HIV in a blood donation camp. Directed by ‘Mahesh Manjrekar’, Nidaan had Shivaji Satam, Reema Lagoo, Nisha Bains and Sunil Barve playing the lead roles.

2. Phir Milenge (2004)
Starring Salman Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Abishekh Bachchan, ‘Phir Milenge’ is the movie that comes to our mind when we talk about Bollywood movies on AIDS. It is the movie that talks about moral issues that people find difficult to deal with.

3. My brother… Nikhil (2005)
My brother… Nikhil is the first movie to talk openly about homosexuality and AIDS in Indian cinema history. Directed by Onir and starring Sanjay Suri, Juhi Chawla and Purab Kohli, the movie is one of its kind.

4. 68 Pages (2007)
Directed by Sridhar Rangayan, ‘68 Pages’ revolves around the life of an HIV-AIDS counsellor and her patients. The film knits the moving stories of the members of the marginalised community, who are discriminated after contracting HIV.

5. Dus Kahaniyaan (2007)
‘Dus Kahaniyaan’ is a movie that talks about 10 different stories of people. The movie is not entirely based on the virus, however, the 5th story starring Dia Mirza and Manoj Bajpai has AIDS playing the center of the plot. Directed by Sanjay Gupta, ‘Dus Kahaniyaan’ was an above average grosser at the box office.
